Barakiel is the Vice Governor General of Grigori and the teacher in Nephilim in the Barakiel Class.
Appearance[]
Barakiel is shown to be a middle-aged, gruff-looking man with black hair, matching beard and a muscular body. Being the Vice Governor-General of the Fallen Angels, Barakiel possesses ten black wings.
Personality[]
Barakiel has a serious and rigid personality as shown during his instruction of Tobio and the others in his class making them run several kilometers measuring in the same league as those who compete in the Olympics to build up their stamina, though strict Barakiel is also very caring and attentive towards his students, and has no qualms confronting Seiryu for his hostility towards his students particularly Tobio, his nephew-in-law. Despite the execution of his wife by the Himejima Clan, Barakiel had shown to take it in his stride, despite the pain her death had caused him, remaining on friendly terms with Shuri's niece Suzaku who is the next heiress of the Himejima.
History[]
Originally an Angel from Fifth Heaven, Barakiel is one of the first few Angels that fell alongside Azazel and Shemhazai, eventually becoming one of the leaders of Grigori founded by Azazel.
During some time in the past, Barakiel was injured and found by Shuri Himejima, a member of the Five Principal Clans who nursed him back to health. This event caused Barakiel to fall in love with her, eventually leading to their marriage. However, despite Shuri giving birth to his daughter, her family could not accept Barakiel due to him being a Fallen Angel, a fact that led her to be murdered during his absence.
Plot[]
Volume 2[]
Barakiel is first shown in Volume 2, where he introduced himself to the Slash Dog team as their leader and supervised their training. He later shows up to interrupt the fight between Tobio Ikuse and Seiryuu Kushihashi, where he reunites with Suzaku Himejima.
They move towards a building where Barakiel gives information on the Abyss Team and agrees to a temporary alliance to rescue Hyousuke Koga and Shigune Nanadaru. He then leads his team members to the location of the Four Fiends, where they encounter a hostile member of the Abyss Team. Barakiel later proceeds to confront Satanael in battle and pursue him after his retreat.
Powers and Abilities[]
Light-Based Weapons: While not shown in the light novel, as a fallen angel, Barakiel has all of the common light based abilities including creating light-based weapons.
Holy Lightning: Barakiel's signature ability, as a former Angel who bears the Lightning of God, he can combine light and lightning together to create Holy Lightning.

- Barakiel's name translates into Lightning of God, which is represented by his specialization in thunder and lightning.
- Barakiel is the 9th leader of the 20 Watcher leaders of the 200 fallen angels in the Book of Enoch, who taught men astrology during the days of Jared or Yered.
- Barakiel is considered to be the father of Hazael, mentioned in the 9th century BCE inscription from Tel Dan.
